Honors Program Description

This is an English-taught micro-program. The theme of the course is to introduce the stories of Kaohsiung from multiple perspectives, including local culture, social development, and architecture. In so doing,  students could grasp a broader social and cultural understanding of Kaohsiung and even the whole of Taiwan. This series of courses aims to lead students to understand the country through an in-depth analytical approach.

This Micro-Program focuses on enhancing students' understanding of Taiwanese culture through three main aspects:

  1. Local Studies (Kaohsiung Studies):

Originating from the vibrant city of Kaohsiung, our curriculum delves deeply into the urban development history of this locale, encompassing its social, economic, cultural, and historical dimensions. Through this exploration, students not only gain profound insights into Kaohsiung but also broaden their understanding to embrace the diverse social and cultural tapestry of Taiwan..

  1. Cultural Content and Institutions:

Taiwan boasts a rich and diverse cultural heritage. This program aims to enhance students' appreciation of Taiwanese culture by immersing them in the aesthetic intricacies of classical literature. Moreover, through rigorous scientific inquiry, students will critically examine the ramifications of modernization and technological progress within Taiwan. Furthermore, while Taiwan's democratic system is not exclusive to Asia but resonates globally, students are urged to delve into its evolution and comprehend the nation's trajectory toward democracy. By engaging with these multifaceted dimensions, the program seeks to equip students with a holistic understanding of Taiwan, encompassing cultural aesthetics, technological advancements, and institutional frameworks.

  1. Globalization Perspective:

Being an island nation, Taiwan remains acutely attuned to the dynamic shifts within the global landscape. Taiwanese students must grasp the nuances of global affairs and discern Taiwan's position amidst the currents of globalization. As our society undergoes rapid transformations, students will be empowered with the requisite competencies and skills to navigate global changes and confront emerging challenges head-on.
